Red Bay Coffee Roasters
Bringing beautiful coffee to the people
Former Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor Keba Konte’s “coffee dojo” in Oakland is a space created with intention. A small tribute to botanist George Washington Carver fills one corner, while a massive, plant-filled sculpture shaped like Africa occupies a wall. Konte’s mission goes beyond serving excellent coffee; he wants to make sure that the people who comprise the majority of the coffee labor force (and the people who look like them) feel welcomed and supported — not only in the cafe, but in the coffee world as a whole.
Brewing a More Equitable Coffee Industry
Founder Keba Konte has made it his mission to right the inequities of the coffee supply chain. What that looks like in practice: cafes that are “unapologetically welcoming” to Black and brown patrons, farmers paid 5 times the industry standard, and a labor chain that eliminates the structural barriers common in coffee.
